Instructors

Laurie Hatfield entered the fabric and quilting industry later in life, after working with stained glass and woodworking for decades. She quickly fell in love with the immense variety of fabrics and soon purchased a longarm quilting machine and started a business quilting for others. A few years later she added a multi-needle embroidery machine to her business and both machines are operating most days. Additionally, Laurie has taught beginning and intermediate quilting classes. Laurie has won numerous ribbons and awards at local and state fairs, quilt shows, and fabric industry competitions.

Quilt designer and author, Karla Alexander lives in beautiful Salem OR, with her husband Don and family dog, Lucy. Her three sons, Shane, Kelly, and William currently attend college at Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon. Karla Alexander is the author of Stack the Deck! Crazy Quilts in 4 Easy Steps!, Stack a New Deck!, New Cuts for New Quilts, Baby Wraps! Color Shuffle, Stack The Deck – Revisited and her newest book, Dynamic Quilts with easy Curves. She is currently hard at work on her 8th book, due for release in October of 2013. She was a featured artist on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson in July of 2002. A featured quilter in the Fons and Porter magazine, Oct. 2007, a contributor to the 2008 quilt calendar by Martingale & Co. as well as the book Creative Quilting, Volume II. All books were published by Martingale & Co, That Patchwork Place. In addition to her books, she has released her own line of patterns under the name Saginaw Street Quilt Company and Specialty Rulers from Creative Grids. She has been a featured teacher at many quilt retreats and has taught thousands of students how to quilt using a variety of methods including her own stack methods. She has made hundreds of quilts with hundreds more waiting to be made.

MaryBetts Sinclair has been a massage therapist for 48 years and is a former Emergency Medical Technician. She has practiced massage in many different environments, including physical therapy and chiropractic offices, hospices, clinics for disabled people in Canada, South America, South Korea and Indonesia, and in her own private practice in Corvallis, Oregon. She has been teaching therapists and laypeople since 1975, and also writes massage therapy textbooks.

MaryBetts has made tremendous improvements in her own eyesight and taught natural vision techniques as well. Many years of sewing herself, and many years of trying to help clients with eyestrain and chronic upper body tension, has helped her understand how a lot of close work (embroidery, quilting, etc) without better habits can affect the body and the eyes. Thus she is on a mission to help quilters prevent the accumulation of eyestrain and chronic upper body tension. MaryBetts has previously taught quilting classes for national Quilt Shows, both online and in-person presentations for Quilt National Houston, Quilt National online, and for monthly quilt guild meetings in Oregon and Washington

Marge McCanse is an Oregon native as well as a 4th generation quilter, having learned from her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She has been involved in many areas of quilting, ranging from teaching through the 4-H program, Chemeketa, local quilt shops, to making the quilt samples for quilt shops. She is well known for her exquisite hand appliqué, as well as her pieced quilts. She was an original member of Mid Valley Quilt Guild (33 years ago!)

Lecture Topics

Karla Alexander

Thursday 10:45 am – Almost Modern Quilts

This is an informative discussion focusing on the significant visual change in quilts over the last 10 years. A movement that was slowly noticed as “different” and sometimes simple has gained immeasurable recognition yearly. Bold colors, high contrast, improvisational piecing, negative space… not your grandma’s quilt, right? So, how does your style mesh with modern quilts and how different is it from what you do? Are you a “Modern Quilt” enthusiastic or only passionate about “Basic Patchwork”? This lecture will provide several samples as well a trunk show to help you identify your niche in the 2024 world of quilting.

Friday 10:45 am – Scrap Quilts

Come enjoy a trunk show of scrap quilts. If you have a mountain of leftovers and feel challenged as far as what to do with them, come join in! I will share tips and techniques that will help you navigate your way through your stash. Decode your colors and prints into useable yardage for a new project. Learn what to keep and what to… re-gift, trash or donate. You will be ready to go with a plan in no time at all. You don’t need to be an engineer to find your way to lift a quilt or more out of your stash of leftovers. Illustrated with a trunk show!

Saturday 10:45 am – Choosing Fabric and Patterns for a Quilt

This lecture is all about choices. And, ugh! Some of us have a hard time with this! You’d think buying new fabric and perhaps a new pattern would make us happy (and it eventually does), however too often it becomes the hardest part! Come listen to my suggestions, tips and techniques that have worked for me. With a few loose rules along the way – you might find an easier start. And, hopefully you will view your stash in a different way. Illustrated with a trunk show!

Classes

The Mystery Quilt

Instructor: Karla Alexander

Thursday, February 15 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Cost: $125
Skill level: Beginner to Advanced

This fun class will yield enough finished blocks to complete a table runner or the beginning of an entire quilt! Come join the fun and see what you can create in a short amount of time! You’ll be able to use the technique over and over on all different sized squares!

Fabric requirements

  • Bring 8 different Light 10″ x 10″ squares
  • Bring 8 different Dark 10″ x 10″ squares

Note: Choose a mix of two color-ways that you feel look good together, a light and a dark or contrasting. For example: For the light, I suggest a beige, white or gray print that appears light from a distance. Solids will work as well. For the dark, choose colors that read well together with the approximate same value. *If you choose to work with either all pints or all solids.

Sewing Supplies

  • Sewing Machine Supplied
  • Basic Cutting and Sewing Supplies
  • Thread to match project
  • Pencil and paper for notes

It Takes a Village

Instructor: Karla Alexander

Friday, February 16 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Cost: $125
Skill level: Beginner to Advanced

You’ll find a dozen or more different ways to use these adorable blocks! You’ll have 3 different blocks to choose from… Create your own little cottage and maybe add a tree or two, OR, learn how to make a spiral log cabin block with a legend OR learn how to sew the letters of the alphabet to send a “quilted message”! I’ll send you away with a bunch of uses for the finished blocks. This is a perfect class if you’re ready to spruce things up a bit and learn a new technique that is fun and can be used over and over again in your quilts. Plus, you don’t need a lot of fabric and the payoff is awesome! You’ll love what you create!

Fabric requirements

  • Note: Choose a mix of small scale, contrasting colors that you feel would work well for a house, tree or alphabet letter, (enough to total approximately ½ yard).
  • You will also need a light value fabric for blocks that require a background. Several light fat quarters or a mix of light scraps will work.
  • You can mix all your prints, regardless of if they are batiks, solids, plaids, etc.

Quilting Doesn’t Have to be a Pain in the Neck

Instructor: MaryBetts Sinclair

Thursday, February 15 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Cost: $15

We all love to sew and get creative! Unfortunately, many dedicated quilters suffer from eyestrain, sore or dry eyes, fuzzy vision, headaches, neck pain or slouched-over postures after sewing intensively. Today, many hours on smart phones or computers are likely adding to the problem. There is much that can be done to prevent the “Square Eyes”, “Tech neck” or “Hunchback of Notre Dame” effect and enliven yourself in a fun, creative way. Learn strategies for:

  • How and when to take restful vision breaks
  • Good ergonomics for your sewing machine, cutting table, smart phone and computer
  • Fun eye exercises
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises

Handouts are included to help you take all this information home, with more great resources.

Featured Quilter – Yvonne Katsinis

I have been sewing for over 50 years. There were many childhood and teenage years of Girl Scouts and 4-H sewing. I was given an excellent base by watching my mother and grandmother make clothing for myself and my five siblings. As a young adult and new bride, I put my graduation gift, a Montgomery Wards sewing machine, to good use. Our pastor used my first quilt for a church auction. I was amazed that anyone would want my work. I was inspired, though. That year, 18 family members and a couple of teachers got lap quilts for Christmas, and the journey began.

My sewing has moved from the kitchen table to a small room and now I have a studio. Wherever it is, that is where I love making my family quilts, pajamas, and princess dresses. It is where I run my business. My sanctuary!

Quilting began as a hobby and has become so much more. It became a job when I got my first longarm quilting machine. Then came the opportunity to teach quilting and longarming. What a fun way to pass the joy on to others.

Now, I am stretching out again into the exciting land of pattern design. Queen of Your Quilts Customizable Quilt Patterns is making its debut here at the 2nd Annual Oregon Quilt Festival! I am so excited to see where this dream takes me.

Special Exhibition

In October 2015, Mary Ann arrived in Eldoret, Kenya with a bag full of quilting notions and embroidery floss. Her hope was to teach obstetric fistula survivors how to make quilts that would provide the women with the skills and self-confidence to achieve economic independence. Fistula Foundation had put her in contact with survivors who had been treated at the Gynocare Fistula Center in Eldoret.

She soon learned that none of the women had ever hand sewn, drawn a picture, or with few exceptions, could use a treadle sewing machine. Since then, over 100 women have been taught to use simple embroidery stitches and applique to tell their stories in quilts.

It dawned on Mary Ann that these art quilts were similar to the famous quilts of Gees Bend in that all the ideas and images came from the women’s own lived experiences. No one had ever taught them how a tree, chicken, woman, or hut should look. They stitched what they knew.

Others agree, and the sales of these unique art quilts have become an important source of revenue for QFE along with our other products, including table mat sets and tote bags.

Historically, the sale of these products at a variety of venues, such as churches, quilt shows, and bazaars, constitutes half of QFE’s annual revenue. In addition, QFE has fulfilled several commissions for Fistula Foundation and the World Forum Foundation.

In 2017 QFE became a registered IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the US and in 2018 a Kenya QFE Community Based Organization was formed. In 2019, the financial success and stability of the quilting program, enabled us to initiate a new program to house and educate girls who have experienced gender-based violence. We are grateful to our Kenya leadership team, U.S.-based board members, donors, volunteers, and supporters who continue to make it possible for us to empower women and girls in Kenya. Learn more about our women’s and girl’s programs.
